Today, Monday 5th September, marks the first sunrise paddle of the season for Sydney By Kayak and, therefore, my one year anniversary of being part of the Sydney By Kayak community.
My first sunrise paddle was on one of the first days of Spring in 2015 and ended up being a solo paddle with SBK founder and kayak instructor, Laura. The overcast forecast of clouds and cool 15 degree breeze had put a lot of others off… but not this eager Brit!
We set off across the calm waters of Lavender Bay, paddling up towards McMahons Point and across to Blues Point Reserve where we paused to take in the spectacle that was happening in front of us. The sun rose magnificently over the harbour bridge and began reflecting off the wings of the Sydney Opera House.
The ferries were yet to start, and I will never forget the stillness of that morning as we looked across the water to the city, waking up for another day of business.
We took some photos, shared stories of our journeys from the UK to Australia, and as the buzz of the city picked up, we headed back into Lavender Bay, ready to start the day.
On arrival at work, I had a massive grin on my face as if I had just un-locked a secret that no one else knew about. I felt I had achieved so much and yet the day had only just begun.
Since that morning, I have become a regular paddler with Laura and the SBK gang. I have formed some incredible friendships, and a network of fun, outgoing, kayak-loving individuals from all walks of life. That morning also opened up a new found passion for kayaking and has led to numerous kayaking adventures taking place all around Australia.
If you live locally in the North Sydney area or are simply happy to get up early to have a magical start to your day, I highly recommend the Before Work ‘Sunrise Social Paddles’. Coffee, friends, kayaking and a pretty magnificent view – not a bad way to start the week!
See you out on the water!
